(The Corning Museum of Glass)

SHIN Jisoo works in glass, exploring the natural cycle of birth, growth and decay through the figure of mold. She received a BFA in Craft Design from Cheongju University (2023) and an MFA in Glass Art from the Graduate School of Design, Kookmin University, Seoul (2025).

Using lampworking and pâte de verre, she renders mold in glass as a mediator between life and death and a vital link in nature’s cycles, carefully controlling the degree to which the glass melts under heat. In works such as Mediator of Nature (2023), Recirculation (2024) and Trace of the forgotten (2025), mold spreading across neglected surfaces becomes a way of giving form to what has been forgotten yet has not entirely disappeared.

In 2025 she took part in Glass: Poetry, Time, Place, the special glass exhibition of the Korean Craft Museum, Cheongju. A 2024 flameworking scholarship from the Niijima International Glass Art Festival, Japan, took her to a summer workshop at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, in 2025.

The American philosopher Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) wrote that nature sympathizes with every wound and heals it. SHIN Jisoo sees mold as existing amid the countless lives and deaths of the natural world. An object that has met its death seems to decompose and disappear, yet thanks to mold it becomes a new birth. The artist looks at mold anew as a mediator between life and death in nature and as a link in the cycle that keeps nature circulating. Because of mold’s mediation, even death can radiate beauty. Though shunned and overlooked, mold holds its own beauty as a mediator at the center of nature’s cycle of birth, growth, and decay.

Using the pâte de verre technique, the artist presents work that visualizes mold. Her practice focuses on the way glass melts under heat and is grounded in controlling the degree of melting. The Mediator of Nature series studies the visual characteristics of mold and aims to let viewers discover a new image of it.
