Hongsi | 홍시
홍시(Hongsi, b.1988)는 자연의 변화와 그에 대한 감각적 경험을 회화로 풀어내는 작업을 지속해왔다. 작가는 빛, 바람, 온도와 같은 자연의 요소들을 단순한 재현의 대상이 아닌, 몸으로 체감되는 감각의 흐름으로 전환하여 화면 위에 축적한다.
작업은 주로 한지 위에 금과 금분, 안료를 반복적으로 쌓아 올리는 방식으로 이루어지며, 이러한 물리적인 축적은 시간의 흐름과 감각의 잔여를 동시에 드러낸다. 화면 위를 가로지르는 선과 번짐은 특정한 형상을 묘사하기보다, 바람의 움직임이나 빛의 흔적처럼 끊임없이 변화하는 상태를 암시한다.
홍시의 회화는 특정한 장소를 재현하기보다, 이동과 경험 속에서 축적된 감각의 층을 드러내는 데에 가깝다. 이는 눈에 보이는 풍경이 아니라, 그 순간에 체감된 공기와 온도, 그리고 시간의 흐름이 겹쳐진 상태로 나타난다.
특히 금을 활용한 표현은 빛과 시간의 감각을 시각적으로 환기시키는 요소로 작용한다. 화면 위에 얹힌 금빛은 고정된 이미지라기보다, 주변 환경과 관람자의 시선에 따라 변화하며, 감각적 경험을 확장시키는 장치로 기능한다.
이처럼 홍시의 작업은 자연을 재현하는 회화를 넘어, 보이지 않는 감각과 시간의 흐름을 시각화하는 방식으로 전개되며, 회화를 하나의 경험적 공간으로 확장한다.
Hongsi (b. 1988) develops a painterly practice that engages with natural phenomena and their sensory experience. Rather than depicting nature as a fixed subject, she translates elements such as light, wind, and temperature into layered visual fields shaped by perception.
Working primarily on hanji (traditional Korean paper), Hongsi builds her surfaces through the repeated application of gold, gold powder, and pigments. This process of accumulation reflects both the passage of time and the residue of sensory experience. The lines and diffused forms across the canvas do not describe specific images, but suggest shifting states—traces of movement, light, and atmosphere.
Her work does not aim to represent a particular place, but instead reveals layers of sensation formed through movement and lived experience. What appears on the surface is not a fixed landscape, but a convergence of air, temperature, and temporality as perceived in a given moment.
Gold plays a key role in her practice, functioning as a visual element that evokes light and temporality. Rather than remaining static, its reflective quality changes according to the surrounding environment and the viewer’s position, expanding the perceptual experience of the work.
Through this approach, Hongsi moves beyond representation, visualizing intangible elements such as sensation and time, and extending painting into an experiential field.
