CHO Yeonjoo | 조연주
조연주(Cho Yeonjoo, b. 1991)는 서울과 영국 글라스고를 기반으로 활동하는 시각예술가이자 연구자이다. 작가는 서로 다른 문화적·물리적 공간을 오가며 형성된 경험을 바탕으로, 경계와 이동, 그리고 둘 이상의 장소를 ‘집’으로 인식하는 존재들의 감각을 탐구해왔다.
조연주의 작업은 ‘창(window)’이라는 모티프를 중심으로 전개된다. 창은 내부와 외부를 연결하는 통로이자 동시에 그것을 구분하는 투명한 경계로 작동하며, 작가가 경험한 이방인으로서의 감각과 공간적 거리감을 드러내는 장치가 된다. 화면 속 풍경은 특정 장소의 재현이라기보다, 서로 다른 시간과 공간, 기억이 중첩된 상태로 제시된다.
비단 위에 그려진 회화와 투명한 지지체를 활용한 설치 작업에서 빛은 중요한 매개로 작용한다. 빛은 서로 다른 공간과 시간을 연결하며, 화면 안팎을 넘나드는 시지각적 경험을 형성한다. 이처럼 조연주의 작업은 고정된 이미지로 완결되기보다, 관람자의 시선과 위치에 따라 변화하는 열린 구조로 제안된다.
최근 작업은 이동과 체류의 경험 속에서 형성되는 공간 인식에 주목하며, 개인의 기억과 감정이 축적된 일상의 장면들을 통해 ‘집’이라는 개념을 감각적으로 재구성한다. 이는 특정한 장소에 대한 재현이 아니라, 우리가 머무르고 떠나는 과정 속에서 형성되는 관계와 시간의 층위를 드러내는 시도라 할 수 있다.
Cho Yeonjoo (b. 1991) is a visual artist and researcher based between Seoul and Glasgow. Drawing from her experience of living across different cultural and physical contexts, her practice explores boundaries, movement, and the perception of “home” as something that can exist across multiple places.
Central to Cho’s work is the motif of the window. Functioning both as a passage that connects interior and exterior and as a transparent boundary that separates them, the window becomes a device through which she articulates spatial distance and the experience of being an outsider. The landscapes depicted in her work do not represent specific locations, but rather layered states where time, space, and memory intersect.
Working with oil on silk and incorporating transparent structures, Cho places particular emphasis on light as a mediating element. Light traverses different spaces and temporalities, generating perceptual experiences that extend beyond the pictorial surface. Her works are not conceived as fixed images, but as open structures that shift according to the viewer’s position and perception.
Her recent practice focuses on how spatial experience is shaped through movement and temporary dwelling. Through scenes drawn from everyday life, imbued with personal memory and emotion, Cho reconfigures the notion of home—not as a fixed site, but as a layered condition formed through time, perception, and lived experience.
