조성묵 | CHO Sungmook

조성묵 (1940-2016)은 1960년도 한국 최초의 전위조각 단체 ‘원형회’ 및 실험미술 그룹 ‘AG (아방가르드 협회)’에 참여하여 한국 현대 미술 조각의 큰 흐름을 이끌어온 조각가이다. 조성묵은 안경과 의자를 모티브로 하여 ‘메시지, 메신저, 소통’ 이란 주제의 작품을 줄곧 선보여왔다. 안경을 재해석한 <소통> 연작은 시각적 경험을 바탕으로 한 소통의 관계를 탐색하도록 유도한다. 또한 의자를 모티브로 한 <메신저> 연작은 통상적으로 부와 명예 권력을 상징해 온 의자의 의미와 달리, 어떤 존재의 자리, 일상에서의 위로, 그리고 성찰이 이루어지는 자리를 의미한다. 이처럼 조성묵은 렌즈가 변형된 안경, 다리가 없는 의자 등, 사물을 재형상화한 조각을 통해 사물에 대한 우리의 고정관념을 허물며 새로운 관계적 소통을 제시한다.

Cho Sung-Mook (1940-2016) was a leading figure in Korean contemporary art, contributing to movements such as Korea’s first avant-garde sculpture group, ‘Wongyeonghoe,’ and the experimental art group ‘AG (Avant-Garde Association)’. Cho consistently presented works focusing on the themes of “message, messenger, and communication” using glasses and chairs as motifs. His series, reinterpreting glasses, invites exploration of relationships formed through visual experiences. His series, using chairs, offers a new interpretation of the symbolic meaning of chairs, typically associated with wealth and power, and instead highlights spaces for personal reflection and comfort. Cho challenged our fixed perceptions of everyday objects and proposed new forms of relational communication.
